The project
This citizen monitoring website for reporting tiger mosquitoes was developed as part of the MEMO+ project.
The aim of the MEMO+ project is to monitor the introduction of exotic mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, such as the tiger mosquito, into Belgium. The project is being implemented by a consortium between the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) and Sciensano.
Sciensano monitors the presence of the tiger mosquito through this citizen science website. This allows citizens to report the presence of mosquitoes by uploading their photos to the website. ITM actively monitors mosquitoes at various entry points, and Bopco (a subcontractor) carries out molecular identification of the exotic mosquitoes collected.
